The Mediterranean and the Gulf of Lion offer one of Europe's largest wind resources. As floating wind turbines do not depend on bathymetric conditions to the same extend as seabed-fixed systems, they provide access to winds that are often stronger and more regular, while remaining further from the coast. The Mediterranean, with its industrial fabric, port infrastructure and maritime businesses has everything it takes to welcome this market of the future and position itself as a major centre for floating wind energy in France.
Following the public debate, two development zones have been selected. They will allow the development of two floating wind farms of 250 MW each. An extension of 500 MW for each wind farm is planned, leading to a total capacity of 1.5 GW allocated by 2025 in this zone. The two wind farms and their extensions will produce the equivalent of 10% of the electricity consumed by the Occitanie and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur regions.
